Lincoln sits for this portrait in a stereo format, meaning the card was built to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the sitter a convincing sense of depth. Stereo cards like this were enormously popular in the 1860s, and portraits of the president were among the most widely circulated, sold to families and sent to soldiers in the field. Dated around February 1865, the image was made only weeks before his second inauguration and a few months before his assassination in April of that year, which lends the card a poignancy the original viewers could not have foreseen.
