Rather than a single portrait, this color lithograph gathers the presidents of the United States onto one sheet, a format that was popular with 19th-century printmakers and buyers. It dates to about 1861, the year Abraham Lincoln took office on March 4 as the country was dividing toward civil war, which gives the sheet an added edge for viewers today. The gallery's record groups it under Lincoln, so it is worth looking at how the sheet frames him among his predecessors and what a visual survey of the presidency meant to audiences of the time.
