Springfield, Illinois, is the setting, and the title places the scene in October 1860, a few weeks before the national election that would make Lincoln president. Candidates of the era rarely toured the country as modern politicians do, so Lincoln spent much of the campaign at home, where supporters arrived by train and parade to call on him. Republican clubs also marched in torchlight processions that autumn, and the country's attention turned to Illinois. The picture is a useful record of how a hometown homecoming became a national political event.
