Lincoln sits with a book in hand while his younger son Tad leans against the table beside him, a pairing that makes this sitting stand apart from the many formal portraits of the president. The session took place at Alexander Gardner's Washington studio, and the record dates it to Sunday, February 5, 1865, though it was long assumed to be a later April sitting. Researchers now regard it as the last time Lincoln was photographed from life, only weeks before his assassination in April 1865. The left side of the image has been cropped, so the full composition once included more of the setting.
