The scroll in this marble statue's hand sets it apart from the many other Lincoln likenesses on the board. Sculptors often used a rolled document like this to point to Lincoln's written work, most commonly the Emancipation Proclamation. The figure belongs to a wave of nineteenth-century memorial sculpture that grew after his assassination in April 1865, when Lincoln came to be seen as the president who preserved the Union and ended slavery. White marble was the favored material for such monuments because it suggested permanence and classical dignity. The pose presents Lincoln as a thoughtful statesman rather than a battlefield commander.
