This photograph shows a working model for the seated Abraham Lincoln that Daniel Chester French sculpted for the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. Models like this let the sculptor refine proportions and pose before the final figure was carved, and French's design, with its seated president, became one of the most recognized images of Lincoln. The memorial's marble statue, carved by the Piccirilli Brothers, was completed in 1920, and the memorial was dedicated in 1922.
