The engraving's focus is the moment John Wilkes Booth, after shooting Lincoln at Ford's theater on April 14, 1865, dropped to the stage, with his spur caught in the flag draped before the presidential box. Booth reportedly broke his leg in the fall, a detail that became part of the manhunt that followed. The print appeared on the cover of *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* in May 1865, when weekly illustrated papers were the main way many Americans saw images of news events. Because photographs of the assassination itself were not available, engravings like this one, drawn from eyewitness accounts, shaped how the public pictured the killing.
