This view shows the presidential box at Ford's theater in Washington, the place where Abraham Lincoln was shot on April 14, 1865, just days after Lee's surrender had ended the main fighting of the Civil War. The image is a glass negative made by the wet collodion process, which required the plate to be coated, exposed, and developed while still wet, so photographers working on location often carried portable darkrooms. Because the picture dates to the same month as the assassination, it has become a rare record of a building that many viewers associate with that event.
