The Lincoln Log Cabin in this picture is the kind of rough frontier home associated with Abraham Lincoln's boyhood in the Kentucky and Indiana backwoods, where his family settled during the early 1800s. Log houses like this one were built from hand-hewn timbers notched at the corners, with a single room, a loft, and a stone or dirt floor, and they shaped the everyday life Lincoln knew before he moved on to law and politics. Later generations came to see such cabins as symbols of his humble origins, and many were preserved, moved, or rebuilt as memorials. The image is worth a close look for its weathered logs and simple construction, which tell as much about the period as about the man.
