Skaters glide across the Reflecting Pool with the Lincoln Memorial rising at the far end, its white columns doubled in the water. The memorial was dedicated in 1922, so this picture shows the site in its earliest years, when the long, shallow basin was still new to the National Mall. In cold Washington winters the pool sometimes froze, and residents came out to skate on it, turning a formal ceremonial landscape into an informal public rink. The photograph captures that everyday use alongside one of the country's most important monuments.
