The Lincoln Memorial shown here is a design drawing rather than a finished building, and it records one of the proposals that competed to shape the monument's final form. Henry Bacon, the Boston-trained architect who later designed the memorial as it stands, worked from a Greek-inspired plan built around an open colonnade of tall columns. The memorial was dedicated in 1922 on the Potomac's edge, with a seated statue of Lincoln by Daniel Chester French at its center. Drawings like this one show how the building was imagined before its details were settled.
