Looking north from the Virginia shore, the view takes in the whole span of Memorial Bridge, which carries traffic across the Potomac toward the white colonnade of the Lincoln Memorial. The bridge was built in the early 1930s to line up with the memorial, so the two read as a single axis, a deliberate piece of city planning. The Office of War Information, a federal agency that operated during World War II, produced and collected pictures of American life, and this color transparency likely dates from the years around the war's end, when color film was still relatively rare.
