This carte de visite shows Abraham Lincoln in a studio portrait credited to Alexander Gardner, who is identified on the mount as photographer to the Army of the Potomac. The Washington firm Phillip & Solomons sold the card, which is printed on albumen paper and mounted in the small format that was popular during the Civil War. Images like this were widely bought and traded, so many people saw Lincoln's face through cards like it. The date of February 5, 1865, falls within a month of Lincoln's second inauguration, a period when his portraits were especially in demand.
