Lewis Payne, the young man who attacked Secretary of State William H. Seward at his Washington home on the night of April 14, 1865, sits here in a knit sweater with his wrists manacled. Alexander Gardner made the portrait at the Washington Navy Yard, where the conspirators were held while the government prepared their trial. The dark metal behind him likely belongs to one of the monitors, possibly the *Montauk* or *Saugus*, where some of the prisoners were kept for a time. Payne was convicted by a military commission and hanged in July 1865.
