The Lincoln Memorial began as a set of drawings before it became the marble temple that stands on the Potomac's edge in Washington, D.C. This preliminary drawing shows the design the memorial's architects worked from as they settled its proportions, its colonnade, and its seated figure of Lincoln. The building was dedicated in 1922, nearly six decades after Lincoln's assassination in 1865, and it later became the setting for Marian Anderson's 1939 concert and Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech. Drawings like this one show how the monument's classical form was shaped before the first stone was set.
