The Lincoln statue is the centerpiece of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, and this photograph catches it before the memorial was finished, while the seated figure was still going up inside the building. The Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in 1922, and the 19-foot marble statue by sculptor Daniel Chester French was assembled in pieces, with the work carried out in the early 1920s. The print is credited to Underwood & Underwood, a Washington studio known for its large output of photographs of the city's public buildings and monuments. Look closely at the scale of the figure against the scaffolding and the workers, which shows how much of the monument's impact came from building it on site.
