The seated Lincoln statue inside the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., is shown here from the left side, which puts the massive marble figure in profile against the columns of the chamber. Daniel Chester French designed the statue, and the sculptor Piccirilli Brothers carved it from 28 blocks of Georgia white marble, with the memorial dedicated in 1922. The angle gives a clear view of Lincoln's clasped hands and the heavy chair, details that are easy to miss when looking straight on at the figure.
