The Lincoln statue on the National Lincoln Monument in Springfield, Illinois, is the detail that sets this view apart from the many Lincoln images on the board. The monument stands over Lincoln's tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery, where he was buried in 1865, and the seated bronze figure was dedicated in 1871 after years of public fundraising. Stereographs like this one were made as pairs of photographs viewed through a lens to create a three-dimensional effect, a popular parlor entertainment in the late 1800s. Seen this way, the statue and its granite setting carry the weight of a nation still working through the Civil War's aftermath.
