Carved into the granite of the Black Hills in South Dakota, the face of Abraham Lincoln is the one of the four presidents on Mount Rushmore that appears in this scene while work is still underway. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum began the monument in 1927, and the project continued under his direction until his death in 1941, after which his son Lincoln Borglum oversaw its completion in 1941. Lincoln's face was among the last to be finished in the sequence of carving, so images from this stage show the rock still rough and the features only partly defined.
