Placards rise above a dense crowd on the broad lawn, with the Washington Monument standing tall at the far end of the Reflecting Pool. The pool lies on the axis between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial, so the Lincoln link on this board comes from the Mall's layout rather than from anything in the scene itself. The National Mall has long served as a stage for public gatherings, since its open ground sits in full view of the Capitol and the White House. The signs, more than the individual faces, carry the message here, which is often what makes crowd pictures like this worth a closer look.
