What sets this scene apart is the dome, still under construction and rising above a large crowd gathered before the Capitol's east front. Work on the cast-iron dome ran from 1856 to 1866, so the building was a working site for most of Abraham Lincoln's presidency. Lincoln took his second oath of office on the East Portico in March 1865, while the dome was still unfinished, and gatherings in that area drew crowds much like this one. Worth noticing are the many figures packed onto the grounds and the bulk of scaffolding and partial structure above them.
