Marlon Brando is the subject here, pictured in connection with Tennessee Williams's *A Streetcar Named Desire*, a play named for a streetcar that runs through its New Orleans setting. Brando had originated the role of Stanley Kowalski on Broadway in 1947, and the production's success made him one of the most talked-about young actors of the stage. Carl Van Vechten, a writer and photographer who portrayed many performers and artists of the period, dated this sitting December 27, 1948. The gelatin silver print entered the Library of Congress as a 1966 gift from Van Vechten's estate.
