Vienna's tramways, shown here in 1923, were a daily fixture of the city's streets, carrying residents across a capital that had shrunk sharply after the Habsburg monarchy collapsed in 1918. The print comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of travel photographs assembled to document cities and countries for readers abroad. Austria was then struggling with postwar inflation and food shortages, so the ordinary bustle of public transit offers a quiet view of city life during that unsettled period.
