Few film titles are as tied to a real place as this one. The streetcar line that ran along Desire Street in New Orleans gave Tennessee Williams the name for his 1947 Broadway play. This c1951 poster advertises the Warner Bros. film adaptation directed by Elia Kazan, with Kim Hunter and Karl Malden in supporting roles alongside Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando. The film earned Oscars for Leigh, Hunter and Malden, and the streetcar in the title, which carries its passengers past Elysian Fields on the way, remains a lasting symbol in American drama.
