Vivien Leigh, Marlon Brando, Kim Hunter, and Karl Malden are the names this color poster for *A Streetcar Named Desire* puts forward, and the film was adapted from Tennessee Williams's 1947 Broadway play. In the story, the streetcar runs on a line called Desire, a fitting image for a drama about faded gentility and raw appetite in New Orleans. Elia Kazan directed the Warner Bros. production, and Leigh's portrayal of Blanche DuBois won her an Academy Award for Best Actress. The 1951 release helped establish Brando as a major new screen presence.
