Hamburg, a town in Erie County south of Buffalo, New York, is the setting, and the title places the focus on its trolley rather than a street or building. The picture dates from the years when electric streetcars were spreading through small American towns, replacing horse-drawn and steam lines and linking outlying communities to nearby cities. The catalog record does not name the photographer or the crew, so the exact date and the car's route remain uncertain. Even so, the image offers a useful glimpse of how quickly street railways changed local travel around 1900.
