Shot in The Hague, the seat of the Dutch government, this street car scene comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs assembled by the Bain News Service in New York in the early twentieth century. The negative is on nitrate film, a fragile early base common in newspaper work of that era. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact year is uncertain. Still, trams were a familiar part of Dutch city streets by then, making the picture a useful glimpse of everyday urban transit abroad.
