A streetcar rolling through Washington, D.C., is the subject of this glass negative, which dates from roughly 1909 to 1923. During those years the National Photo Company recorded the capital's streets, buildings and daily traffic in thousands of views, many of which reached visitors and publishers. Electric streetcars were then a common sight on the city's avenues, carrying commuters and shoppers across town. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947, and the faint streaks across its surface come from the natural deterioration of its original coating.
