Beachy Head rises as a sheer chalk headland a short walk from Eastbourne on England's south coast, and this view looks up at it from the shore, so the cliff face fills most of the frame. The image was made with the photochrom process, a Swiss-developed method that layered several color stones over a black-and-white photographic base, producing the soft, painterly hues seen here. The Detroit Publishing Company held the American rights to these prints and sold them through catalogues like this one, which was issued in 1905 and lists the image as number 10328 in its England series. Seaside views like this one were popular with travelers and armchair tourists of the period.
