Beachy Head, the chalk headland that rises sharply above the English Channel just southwest of Eastbourne, is the focus here, seen from high enough that the coastline stretches away toward the town. Its pale cliff face is one of the best-known landmarks on England's south coast. The color comes from the photochrom process, a Swiss method that printed a series of stone lithographs, each carrying a different tint, to build up the final hues. Detroit Publishing Company issued the view in its 1905 catalog of English scenes, though the photograph itself was likely made sometime between about 1890 and 1900.
