This is a single glass negative titled "Riley," though the title comes from an unverified note on its sleeve, so the sitter's identity should be treated as uncertain. The negative was made by the photographer David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, using the wet collodion process, which coated glass plates with a light-sensitive emulsion that had to be exposed and developed before it dried. The record dates the negative to 1860, a year before the war began, yet the collection files it under Civil War photographs, and a later hand scratched "1898" into the emulsion. That mix of dates is worth weighing when you consider when and why the image was made.
