Dated 1860, this glass negative of Robert E. Lee predates his Confederate service by about a year, so the "C.S.A." in its title was added later, drawn from the Civil War caption books that named many of the collection's images. It was made with the wet collodion process, which coated glass plates with a light-sensitive solution that had to be exposed and developed while still wet. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866. The plate is now part of the Library of Congress's Civil War glass negative collection, a record of how the conflict's leading figures were pictured.
