Roger W. Hanson appears here under a Confederate title, but the picture dates to 1860, before the Civil War began, so the "C.S.A." label was added later by the caption books that cataloged the collection. Hanson, a Kentucky lawyer who later led a Confederate brigade known as the Orphan Brigade, was mortally wounded at Stones River in Tennessee in 1863. The image survives as a single wet collodion glass negative, a process widely used in the 1850s and 1860s, made by David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866. Its date and title show how later captions can reshape the meaning of an early photograph.
