This glass negative is a portrait of Roger W. Hanson, whose title carries the "C.S.A." designation of the Confederate States of America. The image was made in 1860, before the war began, so the Confederate label was applied later, when the picture was catalogued from Civil War caption books. Hanson was a Kentucky lawyer who became a Confederate brigadier general and was mortally wounded at the Battle of Stones River in Tennessee in late December 1862. The photograph was made with the wet collodion process by David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866.
