The title on this glass negative, Ripley CSA, comes from a sleeve note that has not been verified, so the place it names and its Confederate link should be read with caution. The plate belongs to a group of Civil War glass negatives at the Library of Congress and is credited to photographer David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866. Its 1860 date falls just before the war began in April 1861, a reminder that many images in wartime collections were made earlier and later gathered under the conflict's heading. The wet collodion process used here, which coated glass plates while still damp, was the standard for the period.
