The title on this glass negative names a man called Sam Jones and tags him "CSA," or Confederate States of America, but the record notes that the label comes from an unverified sleeve. The date of 1860 falls before the Civil War began in April 1861, so the caption and date may not describe the same moment, and the sitter's identity remains uncertain. The negative was made with the wet collodion process, which coated glass plates with light-sensitive chemicals and was widely used from the 1850s into the 1880s. It is held in a Civil War glass negative collection and is attributed to photographer David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866.
