A sergeant named C.M. Chandler of the 6th Vermont Infantry appears in this portrait, though the title comes from an unverified note on the negative sleeve, so the identification is not firmly confirmed. The recorded date of 1860 falls before the regiment was organized in 1861, which suggests the date may be approximate or the sitting may have been made around the time the soldier enlisted. The glass negative was made with the wet collodion process, which required the plate to be coated, exposed, and developed while still wet, and it was produced by the photographer David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866.
