The subject is Rear Adm. William Branford Shubrick, a career officer of the U.S. Navy whose service stretched from the War of 1812 through the Mexican-American War and into the Civil War era. The portrait was made in 1860 by David Bridgham Woodbury, a Boston photographer, using the wet collodion process, which required the sitter to hold still while a glass plate was exposed and developed on the spot. The negative's emulsion carries a scratched number, 1598, and the title was taken from later Civil War caption books, so the image survives as part of a larger set of documents from the period.
