The title "R.M. West" comes from a notation on the negative sleeve that has not been verified, so the subject it names is uncertain. The picture is dated 1860, a year before the Civil War began in April 1861, so it was made before the conflict and belongs to the collection by subject rather than by date. It is a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required photographers to coat, expose, and develop each plate while it was still wet. The negative was made by David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866.
