Two side-wheel excursion steamers, the *Tashmoo* and the *Idlewild*, lie at the wharves in this view of Detroit around 1901. Lake and river excursion boats of this kind carried holiday crowds out to summer resorts and parks, so the passengers and piers in the picture show the leisure traffic that kept Detroit's waterfront busy. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many views of American cities and waterways in the early twentieth century, made the image on an 8 x 10 inch glass negative, a format that gave its prints fine detail in the boats' rigging and paddle housings.
