Smith & Yendall's Detroit business is catalogued under two trades, butcher shops and general stores, a mix that was common in American towns around 1900. The picture survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative marked by the Detroit Photographic Company, whose views were later issued under the Detroit Publishing Company name. Dated between 1900 and 1905, it reflects a period when commercial storefronts were often photographed for publication and record. The plate reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
