Passersby on a Detroit street in the early 1900s could have stopped at this window of the Richmond & Backus Co., where stationery goods were arranged for display behind the glass. Merchants used such arrangements to draw customers inside, and larger plate-glass storefronts were spreading through American commercial districts at the time. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented the city's streets and businesses around the turn of the century, made the glass dry-plate negative, which measures 8 by 10 inches. The catalog dates it to about 1902, a figure marked with a question mark because it is an estimate.
