Shelves of paper stock recede into the dim interior of this Detroit stockroom, a working view of the stationery trade around 1902. The title names the Richmond & Backus Co., which places the scene in a commercial house that stocked paper for printers, offices, and retailers. Glass plates like this one were the standard way to record interiors at the time, and the long exposure needed to capture the stacked reams and deep aisles shows the limits of the technology. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the negative, is best known for its commercial and scenic views of American cities and industry.
