Inside a Detroit bindery of the Richmond & Backus Co., a stationery and bookbinding firm, this glass negative captures a workroom where paper goods and books were put together. The date is a cataloger's estimate of about 1902, when the Detroit Publishing Company was photographing the city's businesses and streets to sell as views. The plate reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. Look closely at the stacked stock and workbenches to see how bindery work was organized before heavy mechanization.
