The interior of the Richmond & Backus Co. bindery in Detroit gives a rare look at a workshop that produced blank books and ledgers for the stationery trade. The view survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, dated around 1902 and catalogued with the Detroit Publishing Company's large holdings. That company was known for its broad survey of American cities, towns and industry, and its interior views document the workplaces that supported local commerce. Because the record notes the image came as a gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949, it reached the Library of Congress as part of a wider body of early commercial photography.
