Few places captured the industrial age quite like Pittsburgh's steel mills, and this stereograph lets viewers stand at the base of one of the city's blast furnaces around 1905. Stereo cards were sold in pairs of images that, viewed through a stereoscope, produced a convincing sense of depth, and this one was issued by publisher Carleton H. Graves, who sold views of American cities and industry to a wide audience. Pittsburgh was then among the nation's leading producers of iron and steel, and its furnaces ran day and night, feeding the mills along the rivers. The card's caption misspells the city's name, a small reminder of how such views were produced and sold in quantity.
