George Gibson, the catcher for Pittsburgh's National League club, appears here in uniform on the field, a reminder that the Pirates' lineup of the era depended on backstops who handled both hard pitches and the running game. The picture is one of the glass negatives made by the Bain News Service, the New York photo agency whose staff supplied newspapers with sports and news images in the early 1900s. Dating to about 1908, it shows the sport's everyday working ballplayer rather than a posed promotional portrait, and it records how baseball was being photographed for mass readers at the time.
