Howie Camnitz is the subject here, a right-handed pitcher photographed in the uniform of the Pittsburgh National League club, the team now known as the Pirates. Camnitz spent most of the 1900s on Pittsburgh's pitching staff and was part of the 1909 World Series championship team. The picture is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, one of the early commercial news photo agencies, which sold pictures of athletes and public figures to newspapers. The 1913 date comes from later research by baseball historians, since the original caption cards identify the player and team but not the year.
