Howie Camnitz, whose name appears as "Kamnitz" in the title and "Camnitz" on the original caption, pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates for most of the first decade and a half of the twentieth century. The Pirates won the 1909 World Series during his years with the club. This glass negative came from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news pictures to newspapers across the country, so it shows how player portraits were made and circulated in the 1910s. The 1911 date is an estimate based on later research by baseball historians.
