Charles "Babe" Adams, a right-handed pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, sat for this portrait around 1910, during the years he was building a reputation as one of the league's most reliable starters. He was known for his pinpoint control, and he won three games for Pittsburgh in the 1909 World Series, which the club took from Detroit. The Bain News Service, a New York agency, sold news photographs of athletes and public figures to newspapers, so this glass negative shows how ballplayers were presented to a national readership in the early 1900s.
